I don't think they would provide to much protection from door dings against SUVs/other trucks, but might protect against cars. With the curve of the panels, they only stick out about 1- 2 inches from the truck. Hope this helps!

I am not sure how possible this is, but I would use the post in the fuse box that's used for jumpstarting the 12v battery. Try to hook up a power management system (aux beam, Garmin etc) to that post and then hook all other accessories to that system. Here is the pic from the owners manual:
