My Truck Braked For Me & Almost Caused An Accident While Trying To "Prevent" One

So... I was pulling out of a tight parking lot onto a narrow road. Traffic was a little tight, and I was trying to turn right in front of an approaching car. Since the road was narrow, and the truck is bigger, I hit the gas to get in front of someone, and in the process, I got close to another car in the left lane. The truck blared a really obnoxious tone and decided to apply the brakes, much to my surprise. I didn't even know that this was a feature. Point is... the abrupt braking and stop could have led to an accident from an approaching car. Was I turning a bit too early and aggressively? Maybe a little, but not to a point where it was a big risk. But truck decided to brake, which could have made it worse. Might need to turn this setting off, if it's possible.

Anyone else?

I HATE that. My Camry did that once. I was quickly cut across 2 lanes to turn left and almost got Tboned. I learned that the throttle does not immediately re-engage so you can get out of the way before you get hit.

No good. Yeah I need to figure out if its a feature I can turn off.

My girlfriend's Rivian R1S did the same thing to me the other day - it nearly caused a rear-end collision. I asked her if she knew how to disable the feature, and she responded, "I like it." This might be understandable, as she's familiar with the Tesla autonomous driving features, and often takes meetings in her car. That said, I'm not a fan of it, and I expect the 6th Gen 4Runner will have this feature as well. If you figure out how to disable the automatic braking system, please share the solution. It will be one of the first changes I make when I get the 6th Gen.

I will definitely post an update. I forgot to mention this also happened to me when I was backing out a couple weeks ago. I forget why it braked, but I think I was too close to a wall or something. I actually wanted to test it and see how it did with a little more speed. Put like an old mattress or something the system can pick up (that's soft) and wouldn't damage anything if the braking didn't engage. I need to hit the owner's manual to really learn all these systems.

How to Disable Proactive Driving Assist (PDA)

I was curious to see how easy it is to disable so I referenced the 6th Gen 4Runner owners manual (as I am expecting a 6th Gen and had it handy).

To disable Proactive Driving Assist (PDA), navigate to the settings menu using the steering wheel buttons, then find the PDA option and toggle it off.

You can see those settings on page 638 of the owner's manual. Probably similar to the 4th Gen Tacoma.
