I traded my 2022 Tundra SR for a 2024 Taco. Each time I shift from 4H back to 2W there is a knock/catch. I am not moving, but at a stand still. Is this normal? Shifting from 2W to 4W is okay.

My Tundra never did this (However, It was due for an engine replacement along with 100,000 others…so I traded down).

Thanks for your thoughts!

I’m a bit confused on the terminology you’re using. You should have 2High, 4High & 4Low. You can switch from 2H to 4H on the fly. The clunk you may be hearing is the front differential engaging/disengaging. To go from 2H to 4L you must be stopped and in Neutral.

Hello Jake—Thank you for your reply. I fully comprehend what you stated. I tried again and switched back from 4H to 2W while moving about 3 MPH. No sound or catch/knock haopened. Originally, I switched back to 2W when I completely stopped. It is much smoother shifting moving rather than at a stand-still. I think that if I am not moving, I should treat 4H the same as I would 4L…Go to neutral then shift from 4H to 2W. Again, the knock/catch comes when not moving and switching back to 2W. Thanks Jake.

PS - I hope your family/home were safe during both hurricanes. My daughter’s family had to evacuate for Milton (Tampa). Their property had minimal damage.

Much appreciated. We are far enough into South Florida that we were minimally affected by Helene & Milton. But know many people’s lives were upended. The price we pay for living in Florida.

So, to reiterate, going from 2H to 4H you can do without stopping or being in neutral (of course you can if you want). But if you want go to 4L you must be stopped and in neutral.
