Just wrapped up a two-week trip out West in my 4th Gen Tacoma, and it was also the first longer trip with the GFC V2 Pro. I started at Overland Expo Mountain West, where I was there working with Garmin, and from there I made a big loop through the Rockies: Colorado’s Flat Tops, southern Wyoming, the Grand Tetons, up to Bozeman (stopped by the GFC factory to get a latch pin fixed), and finally into Idaho for my sister’s wedding.

The truck was pretty much flawless the whole way. No issues with power or comfort, and it handled highway miles and backcountry dirt equally well. I’m running 285/70R17 Firestone Destination MT/2s on Nomad Convoys, and they were a great match for everything from rocky trails to wet mountain passes. However, they affect MPG greatly, as I averaged right around 14.0 MPG the whole trip.

The GFC V2 Pro camper made nights super comfortable, even when temps dipped into the 40s, I slept great. Just brought an old comforter and was warm enough. Setup and takedown were quick, which made moving camp every day much easier. Having a solid, insulated place to crash after long drives made all the difference on this kind of trip.

Overall, I came away really impressed with the Tacoma + GFC combo. For a first big outing, it gave me a ton of confidence that this setup can handle just about anything I throw at it. I'm heading down to northwest Arkansas this weekend. Cheers!

That’s a pretty big hit to gas mileage. I’m headed out el Camino del Diablo next month and may just upgrade the stock tires to 265/70/17 KO3s with load rating C to keep weight down.

How much does the GFC weigh?

What an epic trip dude! Looks like the perfect trip to break in the GFC.

The camper version is about 275 lbs. I have one as well.

I agree, that was a big hit to the mileage. I'm running 285/70-17 Wildpeaks. My camper is a Dirtbox that weighs around 500#. Plus, all the junk I toss in. I averaged 17.3mpg over 13K miles on a trip to western Canada and Alaska.
