I am getting ready to purchase a 2024 Tacoma, this will be my first ever Toyota. I am thinking about putting larger tires on my truck and wanted to know if I need to also purchase new rims.

You might be able to achieve the same desired look with a more aggresive tread pattern than a larger tire, and keep the OEM rims. What is the reason for wanting larger tires?

More aggressive look.

Then depending on which Tacoma trim you decide on you’ll just be looking for All Terrain or Mud Terrain tires instead of the Highway All Seasons that come on it.

Others on this forum can chime in on your original question, about increasing the rim size. But in my opinion that usually involves lift kits, possible rubbing, and definitely a decrease in your fuel mileage.

If the OEM wheel/tire package was 245/70R17, you need to look for a tire with a wheel diameter of 17".

35X12.5R17 (35") Usually a "True" 35" tire
305/70r17 (34") 34" tire - close to a 35"
295/70R17 (34") 34" tire
285/70R17 (33") The go-to 33" tire

The hybrid comes with 265/70r18 or "33" tires on the Off-Road for example so you would look for a tire with a wheel diameter of 18".

35X12.5R18 (35") Usually a "True" 35" tire
305/70r18 (34") 34" tire
295/70R18 (34") 34" tire
285/70R18 (33") The go-to 33" tire

Any of those sizes would be a good fit on the 4th Gen Tacoma.

Are you sure about those 18" wheel numbers? If you're comparing them to a 17" option, the second number usually decreases (in this comparison) by 5mm. So a 305/70/17 would be the same as 305/65/18? At least I think so? If so, then the ones you've listed are about 1" bigger for the 18s.

It really depends on the brand of the tire. But... a 35X12.50R17 is usually always a true 35" tire. So is a 35X12.50R18.

Both tires have a diameter of 35": https://tiresize.com/tiresizes/35X12.50R17.htm vs. https://tiresize.com/tiresizes/35X12.50R18.htm

For the metric-size tires, you're correct, close to 1" but not always - never measures out exactly from tire brand and tread pattern. For a general statement though, most of the 18" tire sizes and 17" tire sizes are in the same class.

All I am saying is that all those sizes, regardless of tire brand, tread pattern, and lug depth are going to be a good option for the 4th Gen Tacoma.

A little more detail, links, and "tire class" for how they're often referred to with maybe an exception for the 295/70R17. Closer to a 33" class. I stand corrected. I meant to originally list a 295/75R17 right there but whatever. I'll make a dedicated post for this one day and make sure to run it past you before I post it. haha. 🫡
