Power Windows Operation (Page 174)

The power windows can be opened and closed using the switches located on each door.

Switch Operation Modes

  1. Closing: Press and hold the window switch downward. Window closes smoothly while switch is held. Release switch to stop window.
  2. One-Touch Closing: Briefly press the window switch downward. Window automatically closes to fully closed position. To stop the window partway before it closes completely, operate the switch in the opposite direction (upward/opening).
  3. Opening: Pull the window switch upward toward you. Window opens smoothly while switch is held. Release switch to stop window.
  4. One-Touch Opening: Briefly pull the window switch upward. Window automatically opens to fully open position. To stop the window partway before it opens completely, operate the switch in the opposite direction (downward/closing).

Operating Conditions

Windows Normal Operation (Engine Running):
The engine switch must be in ON position for normal window operation.

Windows Extended Operation (Engine Off):
Windows can be operated for approximately 43 seconds after the engine switch is turned to ACC or OFF. They cannot, however, be operated once either front door is opened.

Window Safety Features

Jam Protection Function:
If an object becomes jammed between the window and the window frame while the window is closing, window movement is stopped and the window is opened slightly.

Catch Protection Function:
If an object becomes caught between the door and window while the window is opening, window movement is stopped.

Window Troubleshooting: Jam Protection Reset (Page 174)

Situation: The side window cannot be opened or closed after jam protection or catch protection function operates unusually.

Quick Reset (If within 4 seconds):

  1. Stop the vehicle
  2. With the engine switch in ON position, within 4 seconds of the protection function activating, continuously operate the power window switch in the one-touch closing direction OR one-touch opening direction
  3. Continue operating until the side window can be opened and closed normally

Full Initialization Procedure (If quick reset fails):

  1. Turn the engine switch to ON
  2. Pull and hold the power window switch in the one-touch closing direction and completely close the side window
  3. Release the power window switch for a moment, resume pulling the switch in the one-touch closing direction, and hold it there for approximately 6 seconds or more
  4. Press and hold the power window switch in the one-touch opening direction. After the side window is completely opened, continue holding the switch for an additional 1 second or more
  5. Release the power window switch

After this procedure completes, the jam and catch protection functions should operate normally.

Moon Roof Operation (Pages 178-179)

The moon roof can be opened and closed using overhead switches. The moon roof has two independent operating modes: open/close (for ventilation and light) and tilt up/down (for fresh air without full opening).

Operation Modes

Opening the Moon Roof:
  • Press the OPEN switch
  • The moon roof tilts up slightly, then begins sliding open
  • The moon roof stops slightly before the fully open position to reduce wind noise
  • Press the switch again to fully open the moon roof
  • To stop the moon roof partway, lightly press either side of the moon roof switch

Closing the Moon Roof:
  • Press the CLOSE switch
  • The moon roof slides closed smoothly
  • To stop the moon roof partway, lightly press either side of the moon roof switch

Tilting Up the Moon Roof:
  • Press the TILT UP switch
  • The moon roof tilts upward to the tilt position
  • To stop the tilt partway, lightly press either side of the moon roof switch

Tilting Down the Moon Roof:
  • Press the TILT DOWN switch
  • The moon roof tilts downward to the closed position
  • To stop the tilt partway, lightly press either side of the moon roof switch

Operating Conditions

Moon Roof Normal Operation (Engine Running):
The engine switch must be in ON position for normal moon roof operation.

Moon Roof Extended Operation (Engine Off):
Moon roof can be operated for approximately 45 seconds after the engine switch is turned to ACC or OFF. It cannot, however, be operated once either front door is opened.

Moon Roof Safety Features

Jam Protection Function:
If an object is detected between the moon roof and the frame while the moon roof is closing or tilting down, travel is stopped and the moon roof opens slightly.

Sunshade Operation:
The sunshade can be opened and closed manually. However, the sunshade will open automatically when the moon roof is opened.

Door Lock Linked Moon Roof Operation:
  • The moon roof can be opened and closed using the mechanical key (See your manual page 598)
  • The moon roof can be opened using the wireless remote control (See your manual page 126)
  • For vehicles with an alarm: The alarm may be triggered if the alarm is set and the moon roof is closed using the door lock linked moon roof operation function
  • These settings can be customized at your Toyota dealer

Moon Roof Open Reminder Function:
The buzzer sounds and a message is shown on the multi-information display when the engine switch is turned to OFF and the driver's door is opened with the moon roof open.

Moon Roof Troubleshooting (Page 179)

Situation 1: Moon Roof Closes But Then Re-Opens Slightly

Recovery Procedure:

  1. Stop the vehicle
  2. Press and hold the CLOSE switch
  3. The moon roof will close, reopen and pause for approximately 10 seconds, then close again, tilt up and pause for approximately 1 second, then finally tilt down, open and close
  4. Check to make sure the moon roof is completely closed and then release the switch

Situation 2: Moon Roof Tilts Down But Then Tilts Back Up

Recovery Procedure:

  1. Stop the vehicle
  2. Press and hold the UP switch until the moon roof moves into the tilt up position and stops
  3. Release the UP switch once and then press and hold the UP switch again
  4. The moon roof will pause for approximately 10 seconds in the tilt up position, then adjust slightly and pause for approximately 1 second, then finally tilt down, open and close
  5. Check to make sure the moon roof is completely closed and then release the switch

Important Notes:
If the switch is released at the incorrect time, the procedure will have to be performed again from the beginning. If the switch is released after the 10-second pause, automatic operation will be disabled. In that case, press and hold the CLOSE or UP switch, and the moon roof will tilt up and pause for approximately 1 second, then tilt down, open and close.

Professional Service:
If the moon roof does not fully close even after performing the above procedure correctly, have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.

Real-World Tips & Context

Community Tips for Windows & Moon Roof

Window Reset After Battery Disconnection

If you disconnect your vehicle's battery for maintenance or replacement, reinitialize the driver and passenger power windows:

  • Press and hold the auto-down button until the window fully closes
  • Continue holding for 3+ seconds
  • Then press and hold the auto-up button
  • Continue holding at the top for 3+ seconds

This resets the window's positional memory. This is especially important after battery work to ensure jam protection functions work correctly.

Moon Roof Track Maintenance

Preventative maintenance keeps the moon roof operating smoothly and prevents future problems:

  • Use compressed air to blow dust and debris from the tracks
  • Clean any accumulated dirt with a soft cloth
  • Apply white lithium grease to the tracks (water-resistant)
  • Avoid general-purpose oils which attract moisture and cause corrosion

Moon Roof Seal & Drain Inspection

Before winter or wet seasons, maintain the seal:

  • Clean the rubber seal with a damp, lint-free cloth
  • Look for cracks, hardening, or deterioration in the seal material
  • Check drain tubes at corners of moon roof opening for clogging
  • Use compressed air to clear drain tubes if blocked

Operating Time Limits

Remember that both systems have time limits when the engine is off:
  • Windows: Approximately 43 seconds after engine OFF (before front door opens)
  • Moon Roof: Approximately 45 seconds after engine OFF (before front door opens)
  • Both systems: Completely disabled once ANY front door opens

This is useful to know if you want to allow ventilation before/after stopping the vehicle.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Ignoring Jam Protection Activation
Window stops unexpectedly due to jam protection. Common misconception: The window is broken. Reality: Jam protection is a safety feature. Brief hesitation or stopping is normal when the sensor detects obstruction. Understanding this prevents unnecessary service calls.

Mistake 2: Using Wrong Lubricant on Moon Roof Tracks
Applying WD-40, 3-in-1 oil, or general-purpose oils to moon roof tracks. These water-soluble lubricants attract moisture and cause rust/corrosion. White lithium grease is water-resistant and specifically recommended for track maintenance.

Mistake 3: Not Clearing Moon Roof Drains Regularly
Ignoring the drain tubes can lead to water accumulation in door panels and interior, causing mold, corrosion, and electrical problems. Regular compressed air cleaning prevents costly damage.

Mistake 4: Trying to Force a Stuck Window
Repeatedly pressing the button or pulling/pushing when window is stuck due to jam protection can damage the regulator mechanism or motor. Use the proper reset procedure instead.
