Tacoma Wireless Remote: Lock, Unlock & Button Functions

Complete reference guide for all wireless remote control buttons, functions, customization options, and safety precautions from the official Toyota Owner's Manual.

Five Button Functions

Your 4th Gen Tacoma's wireless remote includes five dedicated buttons for convenient vehicle access and security:

Lock Button
Locks the doors and the tailgate. Press once from outside to secure all entry points.

Unlock Button
Unlocks the doors and the tailgate. Default: Unlocks driver's door first (two taps), then all doors. Customizable to unlock all doors in one press.

Windows & Moonroof Button
Opens the windows and the moonroof. Note: This feature must be customized at your Toyota dealer to be enabled.

Power Tailgate Button
Opens or closes the power tailgate. Options: press-and-hold, single press, double press, press-and-hold long, or disabled.

Alarm Button
Sounds the alarm for security. Hold longer than 1 second to activate panic mode (alarm + flashing lights).

Panic Mode & Emergency Alarm

Press and hold the alarm button longer than 1 second. The alarm sounds intermittently while lights flash.

To stop: Press any button on the electronic key.

Customization: Can be toggled on/off at your Toyota dealer.

Safety Precautions & Key Care

NOTICE - Key Handling

Do not attach metallic or magnetic materials to the keys or place near such materials. Do not disassemble the keys. Do not attach stickers to the key surface. Do not place keys near magnetic fields (TVs, audio systems, induction cookers, medical equipment).

CRITICAL - Distance from Electronics

Carry the electronic key 3.9 inches (10 cm) or more away from turned-on electric appliances. Radio waves within this distance may interfere with key function.

Card Key Battery Care (If Equipped)

Do not apply excess force inserting the mechanical key. If battery/terminals get wet, immediately remove battery cover and wipe clean. If water damage occurs (dropped in water, liquid spilled), have your Toyota dealer replace the battery.

Do not crush the battery cover or use a screwdriver. If battery cover is frequently removed, it may become loose.

BATTERY ORIENTATION: Make sure battery direction is correct when installing. Wrong direction causes rapid depletion.

Card key surface may be damaged if carried with hard objects, scraped with sharp objects, or wiped with thinner or benzene.

Mechanical Key Fallback (Emergency Access)

Your electronic key includes a backup mechanical key for emergencies if the battery dies or remote fails.

Extracting the Mechanical Key:

Electronic Key: Slide the release lever and take out the key.

Card Key: Push the release button and take out the key.

Using the Mechanical Key:

The mechanical key only inserts one direction (grooves on one side). If it won't insert, turn it over and try again. Always store the mechanical key inside the electronic key when not in use. Carry both keys together at all times.

For troubleshooting: See page 598 of your owner's manual.
