Right after getting back from the dealer and before I went on a 1,300 mile trip my tailgate started to malfunction. Every once in a while when I push the button to open it it'll get stuck and stay closed. I have to pull on it while pressing the button to open it once it happens. Pretty annoying but I did predict this would break just not at 6k miles lol. Anyone else having this problem. Fixes?

Did you ever find the problem? A week after getting mine it has done the same thing.

Yes! The little rubber stops that are between the tailgate and the bed are too big. Take them out and the tailgate works fine but then of course nothing is taking up the space so the tailgate can move back and forth when closed. Currently working on some custom 3d printed stops that solve the issue. I'll update this thread when they're ready.

I just got mine back from the dealer for the same thing. They moved the connection points slightly and it's fixed for moment. I would have never chosen a power tailgate it just came with my truck.
I'm guessing this is the first of many times that we will all be fussing with them.

Yupp It'll probably keep happening especially if you take the truck off road. Once I get those little bump stops made it should fix the problem though. For now you can just take them out and it should work fine. I'll include a pic of what they look like below.

I removed that rubber bumper on both sides and the problem was still there, turns out the metal around the latch was hitting the latch catch hook on the driver side of the tailgate and giving enough resistance to error out.

The bumper I'm talking about is the one right above the metal hook in your second picture. Did you remove that one?

Yeah I removed them on both sides and when it still was not opening and I realized it was the metal hitting the latch catch I put them back in. I was able to losen that metal and push it towards the top of the tailgate and solve the problem, the tailgate works now but it’s sooo close to touching I won’t be shocked if it happens again.

ahhhhh interesting ok. Does look like the hook was getting damaged

So the dealership had to move around and massage the bar angle from the piece in your second pic and that is what fixed the problem. Time will tell how well it fixed. Lol

Did the dealership charge you for the fix? I have the same problem 4 months and 4k miles of owning. Sucks

They didn't charge me. They were nice enough about it and let me know it's making their techs nuts.
I told the service guy I would gladly trade the power tailgate in for power mirrors that fold in when I park lol.
I'm not a big fan of power extras, they always seem to equate to extra vulnerabilities in the car.
I hope they get these sorted.
And the roof rack remains "unrepeatable on test drive."

Had the same problem, tailgated worked fine when I first got it. Now 4 1/2 months later not working. Pulled the rubber stops now it works fine. But don't you think playing with the latch on one side or both would fix the problem also?

Possibly! The latch location can be an issue but if you change that then the tailgate won't sit flush with the fenders. I'm almost done with a fix. Get back to everyone soon!

Any updates on this? My Tacoma is having the exact same issue. I'd much rather swap out for the damped manual tailgate. I recently got back from a 4-day overland trip that included a lot of bumpy dry riverbed runs and my tailgate has not been the same since.

Kinda not really haha. Taking out those bump stops has been the best solution so far. I 3d printed out some new shorter bump stops and they worked great for a while but then after I did a pretty good trail with some buddies the tailgate started acting up again so back to prototyping for me. Once I have a reliable working model I'll let everyone know.

Removing the bumpstops works for me too but there is just too much wiggle for my liking. Around town is fine, but after a while it would probably cause more damage to the tailgate. Sooner than later for how often I take mine on trails.

I'm almost at 15k miles and will have my dealer see if they can fix it.

Joys of having the first year of a new generation. 🥲

Do you know if 2025 model years have the same issue?

My 24 off-road has the electronic tailgate. So far no issues.
