What's up guys!
I wanted to share some info and first impressions on an upgraded replacement turbo from turbokits.com that I’m installing on my 4th Gen Tacoma as part of getting ready for a Stage 3 tune from OTT.
This turbo is an OEM-based upgrade, so fitment stays factory-correct, but the build quality is immediately noticeable. The unit feels incredibly stout and sturdy. It's much more confidence-inspiring than the stock turbo. Even just handling it, you can tell it’s designed to support higher boost levels and sustained power without sacrificing reliability. It genuinely feels great in hand and like a proper step up for anyone planning to push the platform further.
For anyone planning this swap, make sure you account for the small but important install details when ordering. New gaskets are a must. I was able to get a list from OTT themselves on what's required, recommended, and what is truly optional. I ended up getting everything, I want the truck to be able to handle anything I throw at it. My train of thought is that replacing everything during installation is cheap insurance and helps avoid leaks, or problems once everything is back together. I was able to get all of the parts (other than the turbo obviously) from my local dealer for less than $300.
As far as tuning goes, this upgrade really shines when paired with OTT. I mean, they did help develop this piece - so why wouldn't I stick with them? OTT is clearly leading the forefront of Toyota tuning right now and, importantly, they are the only certified Toyota tuner. That certification matters in my opinion. Not just for performance, but for safety, reliability, and proper ECU calibration on these newer platforms. Their Stage 3 tune is designed around supporting hardware like this upgraded turbo, which is why this setup makes so much sense. I really like that they offer their calibration on multiple platforms. VFTuner, HPT, and they're even Cobb Pro tuners now. Truly unmatched in their class.
Overall, if you’re planning a Stage 3 build on a 4th gen Tacoma, this upgraded OEM turbo feels like the right foundation to start with. Factory-level fitment, noticeably stronger construction, and designed to work hand-in-hand with OTT’s tuning approach.
Happy to answer questions or update once everything’s installed and tuned.
