Testing trailer lights solo used to mean either walking back and forth to hit the brakes, or recruiting someone to help. Your 4th Gen Tacoma's Trailer Light Check function solves that. It automatically cycles through brake lights, left turn signals, and right turn signals so you can walk around once and verify everything works. Plus, the built-in electrical protection prevents circuit overload from damaged trailer wiring. Here's how to use both systems and wire your trailer properly.

(Reference: Owner's Manual, pg. 104, 207-208)

Trailer Light Wiring, Light Check Function, Trailer Electrical Connection

Your Tacoma includes automatic electrical protection for trailer lighting circuits. This prevents damage to your truck's electrical system when trailer lights draw excessive current.

How It Works:
If trailer lights draw too much current, the auto cut-off function stops power flow to prevent electrical system damage.

Circuit Protection Limits:
The system activates when these limits are exceeded:
  • Stop/turn signal light (right): 5A maximum
  • Stop/turn signal light (left): 5A maximum

If the Auto Current Cut Function Activates:
The affected light won't come on. Here's how to reset:

  • If a tail light doesn't come on: Turn off the headlight switch
  • If right-side stop/turn signal doesn't come on: Put turn signal in off position or remove foot from brake pedal
  • If left-side stop/turn signal doesn't come on: Put turn signal in off position or remove foot from brake pedal
  • If emergency flashers don't operate: Press emergency flasher switch to turn them off

After resetting, operate the light switches again to see if lights work normally. If they don't, get your truck to a Toyota dealer for inspection.

Trailer Light Check Function

The Trailer Light Check function lets you test all trailer lights WITHOUT a second person watching from behind. The system automatically cycles through brake lights, left turn signals, and right turn signals.

Prerequisites:
Light check only operates when:
  • Vehicle is stopped
  • Shift lever in P (automatic) or N (manual)

Procedure for 7-inch Multi-Information Display:

  1. Press left/right arrow of the meter control switch to select the settings icon
  2. Press up/down arrow to select "Vehicle Settings" and then press and hold the settings button
  3. Press up/down arrow to select "Trailer Light Check" and then press settings button
  4. Press checkmark to start the trailer light check

Procedure for 12.3-inch Multi-Information Display:

  1. Press and hold settings button to display the cursor on the content display area
  2. Press left/right arrow to select "Settings" and then press settings button
  3. Press up/down arrow to select "Vehicle Settings" and then press and hold settings button
  4. Press up/down arrow to select "Trailer Light Check" and then press settings button
  5. Press checkmark to start the trailer light check

Light Check Cycle:
The system tests lights in this sequence:
  1. Brake lights
  2. Left turn lights
  3. Right turn lights

What to Check:
Walk around the trailer during the check cycle to verify:
  • All brake lights illuminate (both sides)
  • Left turn signals flash correctly
  • Right turn signals flash correctly
  • No bulbs are dim or flickering
  • License plate lights illuminate

Proper Trailer Wiring Connection

Critical: Do not directly splice trailer lights into your truck's wiring. Direct splicing damages your vehicle's electrical system and causes malfunctions.

Modern trailer wiring harnesses use OEM-compatible T-connectors that plug into the taillight assembly. No cutting, splicing, or soldering required.

Recommended Wiring Harness Options:

Option 1: Genuine Toyota Part PT72535120 (PT725-35120)
  • OEM quality and compatibility guaranteed
  • Designed specifically for Tacoma
  • Integrates with all Toyota towing systems
  • Supports 7-pin connector for brake controller integration
Best for maximum compatibility with Light Check function and auto trailer detection.

Option 2: CURT T-Connector Wiring Harness C56349 (4-way flat)
  • Plug-and-play installation using OEM connectors
  • No cutting or splicing required
  • Specifically designed for 2020+ Toyota Tacomas (includes 4th gen)
  • Provides standard 4-way flat output for taillights, brake lights, turn signals
  • Includes dust cover for weather protection
Good for 4-pin trailers without integrated brake controller.

Option 3: Tekonsha OEM Replacement Harness 22117
  • Includes brake controller adapter
  • Designed for 2018+ Tacomas
  • Quality aftermarket option
Alternative if brake controller integration is needed.

Important Installation Note:
Trailer wiring harnesses for newer Tacomas require a hot lead run to the battery for power. Even plug-and-play harnesses require basic installation (battery connection).

4-Pin vs 7-Pin Connectors

4-pin connector:
Basic lights only (running, brake/turn, ground). System cannot auto-detect disconnection.

7-pin connector:
Adds electric brakes, 12V power, reverse lights. System auto-detects connection status.

The 4th gen Tacoma uses 7-pin for full integration with the Integrated Trailer Brake Controller.

Trailer Configuration System

The Multi-Information Display lets you save trailer profiles (name, length, hitch type, brake type, number of axles). These profiles work with:
  • Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (if equipped)
  • Trailer Backup Guide (if equipped)
  • Trailer Mode BSM (Blind Spot Monitor) (if equipped)

Trailer Profile Functions:
  • Add trailer - Create new profile with specifications
  • Select trailer - Choose which saved trailer is currently connected
  • Deselect trailer - Used when 4-pin trailer connector disconnected (4-pin disconnection can't be automatically detected)
  • Edit trailer - Change parameters (name, length, hitch type, brake type, axles)
  • Delete trailer - Remove saved profile

Real-World Tips

Pre-Trip Routine:
  1. Add trailer in Multi-Information Display settings
  2. Hook up the trailer and connect 7-pin plug
  3. Run the Light Check function
  4. Walk around trailer to verify all lights
  5. Put vehicle in Tow/Haul mode

Known Auto Trailer Detection Issue:
Some 4th gen Tacomas have an issue where auto trailer detection continues showing trailer connected after unhooking. Toyota is aware but as of late 2024, no fix has been released.

Workaround if detection persists:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable for 5-10 minutes
  2. Reconnect battery
  3. Attach trailer to ball and plug in lights
  4. Move trailer about 50 yards
  5. Park and disconnect trailer

This resets the detection system. Note: This is a temporary workaround, not a permanent solution.

Auto-Detection Behavior:
When the truck detects a trailer (automatic detection or manual profile selection), it automatically turns off several safety systems to accommodate trailer operation. Be aware of this behavior change when towing.

If Auto Current Cut-Off Keeps Activating:
Repeated activation indicates circuit overload. Common causes:
  • Trailer lights exceed 5A per circuit (oversized or too many lights)
  • Corroded connections causing resistance and heat
  • Damaged trailer wiring creating short circuit
  • Incompatible LED trailer lights (some draw current spikes)

Have your Toyota dealer inspect. This is an electrical protection feature working correctly, not a malfunction.

Common Questions

Q: Can I use the Light Check with the engine off?
A: Yes, but extended use without the engine running may drain the 12V battery. The system is designed for quick checks (under 1 minute) before departure.

Q: What if the auto current cut-off keeps activating repeatedly?
A: This indicates circuit overload. Check for oversized trailer lights (exceeding 5A draw), corroded connections, damaged trailer wiring, or incompatible LED trailer lights causing current spikes. Have your Toyota dealer inspect the electrical system.

Q: Why do I need the Light Check function? Can't I just turn on the lights?
A: You can verify running lights that way, but the Light Check function specifically tests both brake lights simultaneously, turn signal flash rate and function, confirms circuit protection isn't triggered, and tests all lights in proper sequence without a helper.

Q: Can I splice into my vehicle's tail light wiring instead of buying a harness?
A: No. The manual explicitly warns against this. Direct splicing damages your vehicle's electrical system, triggers the auto current cut-off protection, and voids your electrical system warranty. Use a proper T-connector harness.

Safety Reminders

Your vehicle handles differently when towing a trailer. Keep these safety points in mind:

  • Speed limits for towing vary by state or province. Don't exceed the posted towing speed limit.
  • Toyota recommends a vehicle-trailer speed limit of 65 mph on flat, straight, dry roads. Don't exceed this limit, the posted towing speed limit, or the speed limit in your trailer owner's manual, whichever is lowest. Trailer sway increases as speed increases.
  • Before starting out, check trailer lights, tires, and vehicle-trailer connections. Recheck after driving a short distance.
