All Terrain (AT) Vs. Rugged Terrain (RT) - What Tires Work Best For You

When I was building my Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road 2025, one of the things I kept going back and forth on was tire choice. There are a lot of great options out there, but the big question always seems to be All Terrain vs Rugged Terrain vs Mud Terrain. I ended up going with 35” Kenda Klever R/T tires and honestly I’ve been really happy with them so far.

What surprised me the most is how quiet they are on the road. For a tire that looks this aggressive I expected a lot more noise, but they’re actually pretty tame for daily driving. Off-road they’ve been great too, plenty of grip and the sidewalls feel a lot more confidence inspiring than the all terrains I ran before. Coming from all terrains, I think rough terrains are worth it if you off-road a lot. If you’re only hitting trails once or twice a month, a good all terrain tire will honestly do just fine.

Mud terrains look awesome, but for a daily driven Tacoma I personally think they’re overkill. They’re louder, heavier, and most people don’t really need that level of traction unless they’re constantly in deep mud.

For my setup, the 35” Klever RTs have been a really good middle ground between daily comfort and off-road performance.

Main factor definitely going to be how you use your truck. After that, maybe which one you like the most in terms of looks or maybe the price.

RTs are exactly what they were made for, a perfect middle ground between ATs and MTs. I'm running 37" Arroyo RTs myself.

That said, I do like to wheel hard and love how aggressive MTs look. Will probably go to MTs at some point.

I agree, completely depends on how you plan to use them. If it was just for looks, I'd upgrade to MTs but I don't think its necessary for my Off Roading.
Are you worried about road noise with the MTs?
