Hello,

I'm thinking about replacing the OE flooded lead acid battery with an equivalent size AGM type battery.

The Tacoma charging system provides 13.9 Volts to the stock OE battery.

An AGM battery typically needs 14.4-14.6 volts to properly charge.

Is the alternator/charging system voltage able to be changed/increased to allow for proper AGM charging?

Does anyone know what the procedure is? Is a dealer level Scan tool required to do this modification?

Thanks in advance.

You might be able to ask a local tuner if their software allows you to increase alternator output voltage. It was possible in the 3G. Otherwise, some creative wiring might need to be done.

But you are correct. Otherwise, you will kill your battery faster. Ask me how I know...

I posted the same question on another forum and got different opinions. One suggested , like you, tuner software
may possibly modify the voltage. Others say that a slightly less charging voltage will not affect the AGM battery and
it should work fine with the stock alternator voltage of 13.9 Volts. I don't know any local tuner folks. so, I guess I'm
kinda on the fence with this right now. More research is needed.
Okay, so I have to ask...how do you know??? Sorry , I just had to ask.

I would find/call a local tuner and ask them directly. They will be able to tell you right away.

@Quez can you help us out?

But I can tell you that it won't be enough. I have run AGM/deep cycle batteries in the past, and they all died halfway through their service life. I've gone decently deep into research and have personal experience to know. Will it work? Yeah, it just won't last as long.

What do you want a bigger battery for? Have you looked into power stations, etc.?
