2026 Tacoma Trailhunter
Bought a new 2026 Tacoma Trailhunter about 6 weeks ago. Currently at 355 miles.

I had a professional install two Motohorn train horns, Gasoray kill switch, fang lights, two auxiliary lights, and a heads-up display.

I dropped it off to get PPF wrapped. When I picked it up and started it, the RPMs were fluttering up and down, almost dying, then fluttering again. When I tried to leave the parking lot, I had no acceleration at all and had to coast to a stop.
The dash showed:

• Hybrid System Stopped

• Steering Power Low

Dealer scanned it and the hybrid battery is only showing 12%. The tech said he’s never seen this before and there are no diagnostic codes stored.
He explained that because the kill switch completely powers down the entire truck, the system can’t keep any codes stored — the system needs to stay powered on / running in the background for diagnostic codes to remain.

They’re telling me they might need to order a special Toyota hybrid battery charger, that I may have to pay for a license to use it, and that I shouldn’t expect the truck back by this weekend.
They also want me to approve 4 hours of diagnostics ($920) before they’ll even start working on it.
Has anyone seen this on a new hybrid Tacoma, especially with a kill switch installed?

Any advice is appreciated.

First time hearing about something like this. But why would you be paying anything on a new truck? This should still be under warranty. Especially the hybrid system. It's like 10 years and 150k miles.

I agree, this should be warranty. The dealer is pushing back because I had a professional auto electrician install my Gasoray kill switch. They’re classifying the kill switch as an aftermarket mod.

The truck only has 355 miles so far and this started right after I picked it up from PPF Pros. It’s mostly been sitting in shops. Hoping Toyota can offer some goodwill assistance on this

I wonder if it’s because the battery got drained. I had an issue like this with the RAV4 Hybrid. Two years ago the back window broke. A tech from safelite came to replace the window. During the repairs he had the back door opened all the way. As a result the light dome stayed on the whole time. Next day the car wouldn’t start at all.

I called road side assistance and didn’t pay a penny.

Fight back against the dealer because that Tacoma is still under warranty.

I did notice the map light was on when I got in the car. If they were wrapping the car for a week with that on, that would make sense.

The Tacoma has an auto off timer on the interior lights to prevent killing the battery. After X amount of time (not sure what it is) the truck kills power if a door is open. It is reset each time you close/open the door. But if you opened and closed the door repeatedly without starting the truck all day, maybe it could still be an issue with the factory shut off.

Are we sure the shop installed it correctly? Like do they have any fault here?

The more I dig into the kill switch unit though, the more I can see potential problems. Looks like a cheap Chinese part. Like very cheap. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the issue (some kind of weird parasitic draw). The unit does seem to draw a small amount of power all the time. And I've seen the hybrids drain batteries more frequently (has not happened to me). But what's also strange, I thought that the hybrid battery does not really power the electronics in the truck, that's still more the starter battery next to it.

I could see why Toyota would deny this. You added a cheap aftermarket electronic that messed with a complicated OEM system (more than ever before). Not trying to be rude, just an honest assessment in their shoes. Keep fighting for sure, but this might be an out-of-pocket expense.

If anyone is reading this while doing research, I would highly recommend NOT using a killswitch. Especially on a hybrid. Might be easier to just built a quick disconnect to manually pull power if you're worried about theft, etc.
