Got new TPMS sensors or a second wheel set? Your Tacoma needs to learn their ID codes before it can read tire pressures. Whether you've replaced a sensor, picked up dedicated winter wheels, or had sensors serviced, here's how to teach your truck to recognize the new hardware.

TPMS Registration, Sensor ID Relearn, Tire Pressure Monitor, 4th Gen Tacoma

Safety Precautions

Important: Before starting this procedure, make sure all tires are inflated to the correct pressure (check your door jamb sticker). If pressures aren't right, the warning system won't calibrate properly - you might get false warnings or miss real ones.

Understanding the Process

Every tire pressure warning valve and transmitter (what the aftermarket industry calls "TPMS sensors") has a unique ID code. When you replace a sensor, you need to register its ID code to your truck's system.

When You Need This Procedure:
  • After replacing any TPMS sensor
  • After purchasing a second set of wheels with TPMS sensors
  • After having sensors serviced at a shop that required new units

Key Distinction - Programming vs. Relearning:

These are two separate processes that are often confused:
  • Programming - Puts the correct vehicle protocol into a blank or universal sensor. This requires an external tool and must be done BEFORE installation.
  • Relearning/Registration - Teaches the truck which sensor IDs belong to it. This is done through your dashboard using the procedure below.

Your truck can only register sensors that are already properly programmed. OEM Toyota sensors come pre-programmed and work immediately with the dashboard procedure.

Prerequisites

Before Starting:
  • Ensure all tires are properly inflated to the specified pressure (check door jamb sticker)
  • Park vehicle in a safe location for the initial setup
  • Have access to a route where you can drive at 25+ mph for up to 30 minutes
  • Ensure no spare wheels with TPMS sensors are nearby or inside the vehicle
  • If using aftermarket sensors, verify they have been programmed for your vehicle using a TPMS programming tool

Tools Required: None (procedure uses only vehicle controls)

Time Estimate: 30-60 minutes total (20 minutes waiting + 10-30 minutes driving)

Skill Level: Basic - follows on-screen prompts

Registration Procedure (7-inch Display)

  1. Park and Wait: Park the vehicle in a safe place, wait for approximately 20 minutes, and then start the engine. The wait allows tire pressures to stabilize at ambient temperature.
  2. Access Settings: Press up/down on the meter control switch to select the gear icon (settings).
  3. Navigate to Vehicle Settings: Press up/down to select "Vehicle Settings" and then press enter.
  4. Select TPWS: Press up/down to select "TPWS" and then press enter.
  5. Initiate Registration: Press up/down to select "Change Wheel". Then press and hold the enter button until the tire pressure warning light blinks slowly 3 times.
  6. Confirmation Display: A message will appear on the multi-information display. When registration is being performed, the tire pressure warning light will blink for approximately 1 minute then illuminate and "--" will be displayed for each tire.
  7. Drive to Complete: Drive straight (with occasional left and right turns) at approximately 25 mph (40 km/h) or more for approximately 10 to 30 minutes.
  8. Completion Confirmation: When registration is completed, the tire pressure warning light will go off and the inflation pressure of each tire will be displayed.
  9. Initialize System: After registration completes, initialize the tire pressure warning system (see manual page 537).

Canceling ID Code Registration

To cancel ID code registration after it has been started, select "Change Wheel" on the multi-information display and press and hold again.

If registration has been canceled, the tire pressure warning light will blink for approximately 1 minute when the engine switch is turned to ON and then illuminate. The tire pressure warning system will be operational when the light turns off.

If the warning light does not turn off even after several minutes, registration may not have been canceled correctly. Perform the ID code registration start procedure again and then turn the engine switch off before driving.

Second Wheel Set Feature

Your Tacoma can store ID codes for a second wheel set, such as a dedicated winter tire/wheel package. You can register a second wheel set yourself or have your Toyota dealer do it.

After registration of a second wheel set, either set can be selected for use with the tire pressure warning system.

Operating Conditions:
  • This function will perform the change of wheel set only if a second wheel set has been registered
  • If no second wheel set has been registered, no change will be made when selecting this function
  • Only switching between both registered wheel sets is supported; mixing between sets is not supported

To Switch Between Wheel Sets (7-inch Display):
  1. Have the vehicle fitted with the preferred wheel set
  2. Press up/down on the meter control switches on the steering wheel and select the gear icon
  3. Navigate through the TPWS menu to select your registered wheel set

Note: When adding a second set of sensors, the system may default back to the first set after initial registration. This is normal - manually switch back to set 2 for the warning light to go off.

Troubleshooting: If Registration Doesn't Complete

Conditions That May Delay or Prevent Registration:

Registration can take longer or fail to complete in these situations: Normally, registration completes within approximately 30 minutes. If not complete after driving 30 minutes, continue driving for a while.

  • Vehicle was not parked for approximately 20 minutes or more before driving
  • Vehicle was not driven at approximately 25 mph (40 km/h) or more
  • Vehicle was driven on unpaved roads
  • Vehicle was driven near other vehicles (system cannot distinguish your sensors from others)
  • Wheel with TPMS sensor installed is inside or near the vehicle (such as spare in bed)

CRITICAL: If the vehicle is reversed during registration, the data up to that point is reset. You must perform the registration procedure again from the beginning.

Failed Registration Indicators:
  • When attempting to start registration, the tire pressure warning light does not blink slowly 3 times
  • After driving for about 20 minutes, the tire pressure warning light blinks for approximately 1 minute and then illuminates

If either of these occurs, the registration was not completed properly. Perform the procedure again.

When to Contact Toyota Dealer:

If ID code registration cannot be completed after performing the above procedure multiple times, take it to a Toyota dealer or TPMS shop. The system may need diagnostic equipment to sort out.

Pro Tips from the Community

Use OEM Toyota Sensors for Easiest Registration
OEM Toyota sensors work most reliably with the built-in dashboard relearning process. Aftermarket or universal sensors (like Autel) require a separate programming tool before the truck can recognize them. Without proper programming, the truck will never recognize the sensors, and you'll waste time driving trying to complete registration.

Allow Multiple Key Cycles and Extended Driving
Expect the process to be quirky - multiple key cycles and extended driving sessions may be needed before the system stabilizes. Some owners have reported needing 24 hours before readings became consistent. Conversely, some owners reported tire pressures displaying in less than 3 km of driving. Results vary.

Verify TPMS Pressure Thresholds Match Your Door Placard
The instrument cluster may be preset to 35 psi while the door sticker recommends around 30 psi. After registration, check the TPMS settings and adjust the warning threshold for both front and rear tires to match your placard. This prevents false low-pressure warnings in cold weather.

Manual Instructions May Not Match Menus Exactly
Multiple owners report the manual instructions don't quite match the actual dashboard options, particularly for 7-inch screens. The "Change wheel" option shown in the manual may not be labeled identically. Be prepared to explore menus that may differ slightly from printed instructions.

About the SET Button
If the "SET" button is pushed after new sensor IDs are introduced but BEFORE a relearn is performed, the ECU must be unlocked for the relearn procedure to work correctly. Avoid pressing SET prematurely.

Common Questions

Q: Can I register aftermarket TPMS sensors without a special tool?
A: Only if they are pre-programmed for your specific vehicle year/make/model. Universal or blank sensors must be initialized with a TPMS programming tool BEFORE installation. The truck cannot program blank sensors through the dashboard - it can only relearn sensors that are already programmed.

Q: My pressures displayed briefly then disappeared. Is that a problem?
A: Some owners report the TPMS display appears during and shortly after driving but may revert to showing Trip B or other information after the truck sits overnight. This appears to be normal display cycling behavior, not a registration failure.

Q: How much do dealers charge for TPMS relearn?
A: Dealer charges vary widely - some charge $40 per tire ($160 total). The community considers this excessive since the process takes about 5 minutes. Consider doing it yourself using this procedure, or negotiate to have it included with tire service.

Q: Is the dual wheel set feature new for 4th Gen?
A: Yes. The 2024 Tacomas introduced support for 2 registered wheel sets (for example, summer and winter wheels). This was not available on previous generations.
