I recently had a sit down chat with Tacoma Chief Engineer Sheldon Brown. I asked him why there was no engine cover for the new Tacoma? I was curious if it was because of the heat, money, or what?

Basically his answer made so much sense. He said that if you are opening your hood to look/ work on your engine, then why would you want a piece of plastic in the way?

TBH, that makes total sense. I guess we have just grown accustomed to seeing plastic in the engine bay.

The hood itself covers the engine, so when you pop the hood, you simply just see it. They didn’t want to do an engine cover as well for added sound reduction because they focused on the ANC built into the truck along with having padding on the hood (for select models).

I have no padding on my 24 TRD Sport and hate the engine sound but love the truck overall. I saw a video that said the same engine is in the Lexus RX and it has a cover. My wife drove a 24 Lexus and it seemed much better.
