Proper tire pressure affects your Tacoma's safety, fuel efficiency, tire life, and ride comfort. Whether you're checking pressure before a long drive, rotating tires, or installing new wheels, here's what you need to know about tire specs and torque values for your truck.

Tacoma Tire Pressure: PSI Specs, Torque & Cold Inflation

Safety Precautions

Tire Age Limit: 6 Years

Even if a tire looks fine, it degrades over time. Any tire older than 6 years needs a professional inspection before you keep using it - rubber dries out and can fail without warning, regardless of tread depth.

When to Replace Your Tires (Safety First)

Replace your tires if you notice any of these signs:
  • The treadwear indicators are showing on a tire
  • You have tire damage such as cuts, splits, cracks deep enough to expose the fabric, and bulges indicating internal damage
  • A tire goes flat repeatedly or cannot be properly repaired due to the size or location of a cut or other damage

Important: Measure Tire Pressure When Cold

All pressures below are for cold tires - measure before you drive or after the truck has sat for 3+ hours. Tires heat up during driving, which increases pressure, so you'll get a false reading if you check right after driving.

Wheel Nut Torque Reference

Critical for wheel safety: Proper wheel nut torque is essential for wheel retention and safe operation.

  • Aluminum Wheels (Standard): 97 ft·lbf (131 N·m, 13.4 kgf·m)
  • Steel Wheels (Some Configurations): 154 ft·lbf (209 N·m, 21.3 kgf·m)

Always use a calibrated torque wrench when tightening wheel nuts. Cross-check your specific configuration to determine the correct torque specification for your truck.

Tire Maintenance

Checking Your Tires

Treadwear Indicators:
  • Check if the treadwear indicators are showing on the tires
  • The location of treadwear indicators is marked by "TWI" or similar symbol molded into the sidewall of each tire
  • Check the tires for uneven wear (excessive wear on one side may indicate alignment issues)
  • Check the spare tire condition and pressure if not regularly rotated

Maximum Load of Your Tires

When replacing tires, verify that the replacement tire meets your Tacoma's load requirements:

Check that the number given by dividing the maximum load by 1.10 of the replacement tire is greater than 1/2 of the Gross Axle Weight Ratings (GAWR) of either the front axle or the rear axle, whichever is greater.

  • For GAWR information: See the Certification Label on your vehicle
  • For the maximum load of the tire: See the load limit at maximum cold tire inflation pressure mentioned on the sidewall of the tire

Important Notes

  • Cold Pressure Only: All specifications listed are cold tire pressure. Do not bleed air from tires after driving when pressures are elevated due to heat.
  • 6-Year Tire Age Limit: Any tire older than 6 years must be checked by a qualified technician, regardless of tread depth or visible condition.
  • Torque Wrench Required: Use a calibrated torque wrench when tightening wheel nuts. Under-torquing can lead to wheel loss; over-torquing can strip lugs or warp rotors.
  • Check Your Manual: Always verify specifications against your own vehicle's owner's manual before service work.
