This thread consolidates fuel specifications from pages 615 and 623 of your owner's manual into a quick-reference guide for fuel capacity, fuel type requirements, octane rating, and gasoline quality recommendations.

Tacoma Fuel Tank: Capacity, Gas Type & Octane Specs

Fuel Tank Capacity

18.2 Gallons (69.0 Liters, 15.2 Imperial Gallons)

Source: Toyota Owner's Manual, Page 615

Fuel Type and Octane Requirement

Fuel Type: Unleaded gasoline ONLY

Minimum Octane Rating: 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher

Use of unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than 87 may result in engine knocking. Persistent knocking can lead to engine damage.

Critical Ethanol Content Limitation

MAXIMUM ETHANOL CONTENT: 15% (E15)

DO NOT use:
  • E85 (85% ethanol)
  • E50 (50% ethanol)
  • E30 (30% ethanol)
  • Any flex-fuel or gasoline containing more than 15% ethanol

Use only gasoline containing up to 15% ethanol. DO NOT use any flex-fuel or gasoline that could contain more than 15% ethanol, including from any pump labeled E30 (30% ethanol), E50 (50% ethanol), E85 (85% ethanol) (which are only some examples of fuel containing more than 15% ethanol).

Gasoline Quality Recommendations

Toyota Strongly Recommends: Top Tier Detergent Gasoline

Top Tier gasoline contains enhanced detergent packages that protect your fuel system and maintain fuel injector cleanliness. This is especially important for modern direct-injection engines like the T24A-FTS turbo in your Tacoma.

While all gasoline sold in the U.S.A. contains minimum detergent additives per EPA regulations, Top Tier brands provide additional protection. For a list of Top Tier marketers, visit www.toptiergas.com

Acceptable Alternative: Low-emissions reformulated gasoline (containing ethanol up to 15% or other oxygenates) is acceptable and recommended for reduced vehicle emissions.

Fuel Standards Reference

At minimum, your gasoline should meet ASTM D4814 specifications in the United States.

Why These Specifications Matter

The T24A-FTS Turbo Engine

Your Tacoma uses a turbocharged direct-injection 4-cylinder engine. This powertrain has specific fuel requirements:

Octane 87 Minimum: The turbocharger adds boost pressure to the intake manifold. Low-octane fuel (86 or lower) is more susceptible to detonation under boost conditions, which can cause catastrophic piston damage and engine failure.

Unleaded Gasoline Only: Modern catalytic converters and fuel injection systems are engineered for unleaded fuel. Leaded gasoline destroys catalytic converters and deposits harmful residue on fuel injectors.

Ethanol Content Limit (E15 Maximum): Your Tacoma's fuel system, including pump seals, gaskets, and precision fuel injectors, is tested and rated for up to 15% ethanol. Higher blends (E85, E50, E30) can:
  • Corrode rubber seals and plastic fuel system components
  • Cause fuel pump cavitation and catastrophic failure ($500-1,200 repair)
  • Damage fuel injectors through chemical incompatibility
  • Significantly reduce fuel efficiency (E85 requires 25-30% more volume)
  • Void your vehicle warranty

Top Tier Detergent Gasoline: Direct-injection engines are particularly sensitive to fuel system deposits. Over time, low-quality gasoline allows deposit buildup on fuel injectors, reducing spray pattern precision and causing rough idle, hesitation, and loss of power.

Common Fuel Mistakes (And Why They Cost Money)

Mistake #1: Using E85 to Save Money
Reality: E85 fuel provides 25-30% fewer miles per gallon than regular unleaded. You're not saving money - you're spending more per mile and risking fuel pump failure.

Mistake #2: Using 86-Octane to Save Money
Reality: One tank of low-octane fuel in a boosted turbo engine during hard acceleration can cause detonation damage requiring $2,500-3,500 in engine repairs.

Mistake #3: Using Whatever Brand Is Cheapest
Reality: Saving $0.05/gallon today costs $400-600 in fuel injector cleaning next year. Stick with Top Tier brands (Shell, Chevron, Costco, etc.).

Quick Reference Checklist

Before refueling, verify:

  1. Fuel pump nozzle shows "Unleaded" - REQUIRED
  2. Octane rating is 87 or higher (check pump label) - REQUIRED
  3. Pump shows "E10" or "E15" blend, NOT "E30," "E50," or "E85" - REQUIRED
  4. If available, choose Top Tier brand (Shell, Chevron, Costco, Texaco, Sunoco, etc.) - RECOMMENDED
  5. Avoid pump labeled E85, E30, or high-ethanol blend - CRITICAL
