Fuel Type and Octane Requirement​

Fuel Type: Unleaded gasoline ONLY

Minimum Octane Rating: 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher

Use of unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than 87 may result in engine knocking. Persistent knocking can lead to engine damage.

Critical Ethanol Content Limitation​

MAXIMUM ETHANOL CONTENT: 15% (E15)

DO NOT use:

• E85 (85% ethanol)
• E50 (50% ethanol)
• E30 (30% ethanol)
• Any flex-fuel or gasoline containing more than 15% ethanol

Use only gasoline containing up to 15% ethanol. DO NOT use any flex-fuel or gasoline that could contain more than 15% ethanol, including from any pump labeled E30 (30% ethanol), E50 (50% ethanol), E85 (85% ethanol) (which are only some examples of fuel containing more than 15% ethanol).

Toyota Strongly Recommends: Top Tier Detergent Gasoline

Top Tier gasoline contains enhanced detergent packages that protect your fuel system and maintain fuel injector cleanliness. This is especially important for modern direct-injection engines like the T24A-FTS turbo in your Tacoma.

Acceptable Alternative: Low-emissions reformulated gasoline (containing ethanol up to 15% or other oxygenates) is acceptable and recommended for reduced vehicle emissions.

Why These Specifications Matter​

The T24A-FTS Turbo Engine​

Your Tacoma uses a turbocharged direct-injection 4-cylinder engine. This powertrain has specific fuel requirements:

Octane 87 Minimum: The turbocharger adds boost pressure to the intake manifold. Low-octane fuel (86 or lower) is more susceptible to detonation under boost conditions, which can cause catastrophic piston damage and engine failure.
