Vehicle Capacity Weight and Seating (Page 613)

Vehicle capacity weight (occupants + cargo) varies by model configuration and driving system. 4WD models have reduced capacity compared to 2WD due to additional drivetrain component weight.

Capacity Weight by Configuration:

ModelBedDrivetrainCapacity Weight
Xtra CabLong2WD1060-1100 lb (480-500 kg)
Xtra CabLong4WD880 lb (400 kg)
Double CabLong or Short2WD1200 lb (545 kg)
Double CabLong4WD1200-1270 lb (545-575 kg)
Double CabShort4WD1200 lb (545 kg)

Seating Capacity:
  • Vehicles without rear seats: 2 occupants (Xtra Cab configuration)
  • Vehicles with rear seats: 5 occupants (Front 2, Rear 3) - Double Cab configuration

Understanding Your Tacoma's Dimensions

Wheelbase and Overall Length

The wheelbase (distance from front axle to rear axle) is the primary factor determining overall length:

  • 131.9 inches (3350 mm): All Xtra Cab models and Double Cab with short bed = 213.0" overall length
  • 145.1 inches (3685 mm): Double Cab with long bed = 226.2" overall length (13.2 inches longer)

The extra wheelbase on the long bed affects maneuverability in tight spaces and parking situations.

Width and Height Variations by Tire Selection

The factory offers three OEM tire size options, each affecting overall width and height:

245/70R17 Tires (Standard): Narrowest and lowest profile (76.9" width, 73.8-74.0" height)

265/70R17 Tires (Optional Upgrade): Approximately 1 inch wider (77.9" width) with minimal height increase (74.0-74.6")

265/65R18 Tires (Premium Option): Approximately 1 inch wider (77.9" width) and noticeably taller (74.6-74.7")

Width and height variations are important for:
  • Garage and carport clearance (especially with roof racks)
  • Door and mirror clearances in tight parking spaces
  • Off-road obstacle clearance calculations
  • Trailer towing weight distribution and brake requirements

Tread Width (Stance)

Front and rear tread measurements reflect the vehicle's wheel track width and vary with tire/wheel package selection:

  • 245/70R17 tires: 65.6-65.6 in front/rear (narrowest stance)
  • 265/70R17 tires: 66.0-66.0 in front/rear (+0.4 inches)
  • 265/65R18 tires: 66.8-66.9 in front/rear (+1.2-1.3 inches, widest stance)

Wider tread improves off-road stability but may affect maneuverability in narrow passages.

2WD vs 4WD Capacity Weight Differences

Notice the capacity weight reduction in 4WD models:
  • Xtra Cab 2WD: 1060-1100 lb capacity
  • Xtra Cab 4WD: 880 lb capacity (220-220 lb reduction)
  • Double Cab 2WD: 1200 lb capacity
  • Double Cab 4WD: 1200-1270 lb capacity (varies by trim)

The additional weight of the transfer case, front differential, and 4WD driveshafts reduces available payload capacity. This is important when loading cargo and calculating towing limits.

Quick Reference

Identifying Your Tacoma:
  • Single cab with long bed only: Xtra Cab (213.0" length, 131.9" wheelbase)
  • Four-door cab with rear windows, short bed: Double Cab Short Bed (213.0" length, 131.9" wheelbase)
  • Four-door cab with rear windows, long bed: Double Cab Long Bed (226.2" length, 145.1" wheelbase)

Tire Size Default:
Most base and mid-trim models come with 245/70R17 tires. Check your sidewalls or door jamb sticker to verify actual tire size.

Finding Your Capacity Weight:
Look for the yellow/white Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) decal on the driver's door jamb. This specifies your vehicle's maximum safe weight including cargo. Your capacity weight (from this thread) tells you how much additional weight you can safely add to the empty vehicle.
