What was Toyota thinking when designing the 4th gen and putting a smaller gas tank than the 3rd gen?? I have had mine since January and I have yet to get at least 300 miles out of a tank. Closer to 270 is what I’m averaging. I drive mostly city but still having to refuel this often sucks.

We all feel you, haha. The tank should be bigger. Tough to say this early, but there may be enough complaints to see an upgrade down the line when they do a refresh. In the meantime, we'll have to wait and see what auxiliary or larger gas tanks are made available.

I am only getting 254 miles per tank (16.8 mpg if I baby it). This really sucks when I have to gas up when I leave home and then gas again before I get home on trips that I had no problem with my 2012 X-terra (range 300-325). I look forward to someone coming up with a larger tank replacement or auxiliary tank.

That's another gripe I have about the 4th gen. The turbo 4-cylinder is supposed to be more fuel efficient than the outgoing V6 but honestly I've been seeing at the very most 17mpg when driving my mix of city and highway. I'd much rather have the naturally aspirated V6 with no turbo to break than this if I'm going to be getting similar gas mileage.

My only other gripe really is the infotainment system with switching between bluetooth and SXM as I have to cycle through Apple Music/Amazon Music that I don't have set up and don't see a way to remove from the list of sources. In my wife's Blazer EV it's easy to use the mode button, select which source, and push in the OK button. On my Tacoma I feel like I have to use the touch screen to really do this which is distracting.

When discussing range it's sad that our Blazer EV has more range than the Tacoma.

Give it a few months to figure out your driving habits. Then, upon fill ups it will calculate based on your average mpg. I’m getting average 25+ mpg, so it often displays ~ 400 miles. Mind you, there’s still an extra 2.5 gallons from when the low gas light comes on, so in reality it’s more like 450 miles for me (which I do in a week anyhow).

I feel ya regarding the sources of other music inputs coming up despite not having them installed. Wonder if one of those OBDII scanner/modifiers could assist?! I.e., Carista.

The folks at Helivue Design are taking pre-orders on an 18 gallon auxiliary gas tank for the Gen4 Tacoma. Pre-order price is $2000, which is $300 less than list price , so you can save a few bucks ordering now.

So, quit whining about our fuel range and solve the problem. No affiliation. Just a customer.

415 miles. Wow. The most I ever got was 345 miles. Now I get 303 miles. I have an off-road with 33’s Falken Wildpeak.

Hello, thanks for the link Pappy! I just posted a question to HelivueDesign about warranty being voided and would it interfere with SumoSprings. I have a 2025 SR5 4x4 5ft bed w/towing package. Also not sure about emissions and EVAP stuff too? I really am having severe range anxiety; I can only get 200mi range max when hauling my 20' 4000lb travel trailer going 60MPH on interstate. Plus, the fuel tank seems really picky about being "topped off" fast; many gas dispensers cannot flow slowly to allow air to escape. I've been able to get about 1.4gal max extra after cutoff at some older pumps (I only do this if I know I'll be using the gas within 30 minutes).

On a related topic, I don't know how to reset the range for better accuracy as the averaging algorithm really stinks! If I am hauling, it seems to not compensate for recent changes to immediate fuel usage (i.e., not hauling vs hauling) which causes the range calculation to vary wildly. Perhaps I'd like a more direct approach; tell me the gas volume in the tank, and show me the current MPG and I can figure out the range myself. For example, if I had done the range estimate, I would have something like range = Gallons*((MPG@20mi ago + 2*MPG@5 miles ago + 7*MPG@1 mile ago)/10) that way it's more heavily weighted towards near-term MPG not long-term MPG. Based on observation, it seems it just takes the MPG averaged over the last say 300 miles and multiplied by fuel in tank to get the range. If someone knows for sure, I would love to know how to better estimate the mileage left. I know you can reset the average MPG but it doesn't seem related to the range.

Thanks!

Toyota will always do their best to void your warranty... lol. Unless you have a cool dealer. But most of those are out West. But the only affected warranty should be like fuel pump (maybe) or maybe a line or something (which rarely fail), however, I could see them saying something like, your engine blew (for example) because you messed with the fuel system. Sometimes Toyota dealer/corporate can be hard to work with. It really depends.

It shouldn't interfere with bump stops.

It shouldn't affect emissions, etc.

For true "immediate" MPG, you could either reset your average MPG before each tank, look on the final message on the dash after you turn your truck off for trip MPG (that is on my bigger main display with MPH, etc., not sure about smaller one), or yeah, fill up your tank, and divide the tank mileage by the gallons you put in.
